Capsular contracture is a complication where scar tissue, or a capsule, forms tightly around a breast implant, causing it to harden. This response is the body’s natural reaction to a foreign object, but in some cases, the capsule thickens and contracts excessively. Capsular contracture can lead to discomfort, pain, and visible changes in the shape or position of the breast, making it appear distorted or misshapen. It is graded in severity, with more severe cases potentially requiring corrective treatment to alleviate symptoms, soften the capsule, or, in some cases, remove and replace the implant.
