Malnutrition is a leading risk factor for mortality in children under the age of five. Malnourished children have a higher risk of mortality from common childhood illnesses such as diarrhoea, pneumonia, and malaria. Globally, nutrition-related factors contribute to about 45 percent of deaths in under-5 children In India, malnutrition accounts for 68.2 percent of the total under-5 deaths and is attributable to 67ยท1 percent of the total Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) in under-5 children.
