The Xiphos sword was shorter and lighter than many historical swords, typically measuring about 50–60 cm. Its leaf-shaped, double-edged blade allowed both effective cutting and thrusting. Compared with the Gladius, it was similar in size but had a broader center for stronger slashes. Unlike the curved Kopis, which focused on powerful chopping strikes, the Xiphos was more balanced, making it well suited for quick movements and close-combat fighting in tight infantry formations.
